Kettlebell Swing: Proper Form, Weight Choice and Workouts

Published October 20, 2026

The kettlebell swing is an explosive hip hinge: you hike the bell back between your legs, then snap your hips forward so the bell floats to about chest height, arms relaxed. It builds the glutes, hamstrings and grip while raising your heart rate, and a six-week swing program improved both maximal and explosive strength in one study (Lake & Lauder, 2012).

How to swing, step by step

  1. Setup: bell about a foot (30 cm) in front of you, feet slightly wider than hips.
  2. Hinge: push hips back, flat back, grab the handle with both hands.
  3. Hike: pull the bell back between your legs like a football snap, high on your thighs.
  4. Snap: drive your hips forward hard, squeezing glutes; the bell floats up.
  5. Top: standing tall, plank position, bell around chest height, arms just guiding.
  6. Return: let the bell fall, hinge at the last moment, hike back again.

It is a hip movement, not a squat and not a front raise.

Which kettlebell weight?

Pair swings with Romanian deadlifts for posterior-chain strength.

Safety

Clear space around you, flat-soled shoes, no swinging through a lower-back pain flare. Learn the hinge with a coach or a mirror before adding speed.
