Average 5K Time: What's a Good 5K Time for Your Level?

Published October 20, 2026

There is no single official "average 5K time": it depends entirely on who shows up to a given race, from walkers to club runners. The fair way to judge your time is to convert it to a pace, compare it with your own previous result, and look at your age group in the official results of the race you actually ran. The tables below give finish times for every pace and realistic goals by level.

Realistic goals

Your situationSensible first goal
New runner, run-walkFinish without stopping (see couch to 5K)
Can run 30 min continuouslySub-35 or sub-33
Running 3×/week for 6+ monthsSub-30, then sub-28
Experienced, structured trainingSub-25, sub-22, sub-20

How to judge your time fairly

  1. Your own history: a PR is a PR.
  2. Your age and sex group in the official results of your race (most race sites show the median or rankings by category).
  3. The course: hills, heat, crowded starts and GPS accuracy change times.

How much faster can training make you?

Improvements are largest in the first months. Most runners who add structured training (easy volume plus one weekly interval session) take noticeable time off over 8-12 weeks. Training at low intensity most of the time, with a small amount of hard work, is the pattern of successful endurance athletes (Seiler, 2010).

Race-day pacing

Start the first mile 5-10 seconds slower than goal pace, settle in, and push the last half mile. Going out too fast is the most common 5K mistake.

Walking a 5K

At a brisk 15-17 minutes per mile, a walked 5K takes about 47-53 minutes and is a great goal on its own. See walking for weight loss.
